Tryouts for ALL Matthews USA teams and programs registering for the 2008-2009 season will be held at Col Beatty Park.  Please note the tryout times below, as these are the times for each age group and gender.

Record numbers turned out Sunday night for Matthew USA Pre-Tryout Workouts for U-16 to U-18 at Colonel Beatty fields. The players had a workout that included a ball specific warm-up, small-sided possession games and an 8v8 tournament.

Girls Director of Coaching Gary Curneen was delighted with the turnout; “It is a great start to what we are doing here. The numbers who attended were obviously very high but I was also very impressed by the quality of players on show. It is not an easy time to do this with the High School playoffs just around the corner so I really appreciate the effort made by players and parents. It is great to see that the players share the enthusiasm of the coaching staff in the new direction of the club".

MUSA will hold a final Pre-Tryout Workout for rising Girls U-16 to U-18 on Thursday May 15 at 6.30 to 8.00pm. All coaches will be using this final workout to finish pre-evaluation of players in the lead up to Tryouts.

As the Challenge season comes to an end, two Matthews USA teams finished out the season on a high note at the Charlotte City Cup this weekend.  The 98 Crew boys team finished group play 3-0 and made it to the finals, but came up just short in the finals of the U-9 Gold division 1-0 to North Meck SC. 

In the U10 Gold National Division, the Matthews USA 97 Gold completed group play with 2 wins and a tie, making it to the finals.  In the finals, Matthews USA came up winners, with a 5-2 victory over a tough Lake Norman SC team. 

Congratulations to both teams for a strong showing this weekend and for a great season.

Coach Del Pino is currently the Charlotte Catholic Men’s and Women’s JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach, where he has served for 6 years along side head coach Gary Hoilett.  He will be taking the reigns of the boy’s varsity team at Charlotte Catholic this Fall.  While the assistant coach at Catholic, the Cougars varsity have won 3 state championships and been finalists twice.

Matthews USA Announced today that Ion Diaconescu will join their staff this summer. Diaconescu has an outstanding playing background that has seen him represent Romania’s largest and most distinguished side, Steaua Bucharest. They are the most successful Romanian football team ever in European competitions as well in the Romanian Liga One with 23 championship wins. They became the first eastern European team to win the UEFA Champions League (then European Cup) being victorious in the 1986 European Cup Final.

Current Gardner-Webb University Men’s Associate Head coach Jason Osborne will be joining Matthews USA for the 2008-2009 season.  Coach Osborne is in his fifth year at Gardner-Webb University after joining men’s soccer coaching staff in the summer of 2005.
